Indiction

The "indiction" was a 15-year cycle that was used to date documents in Late Antiquity and Medieval Europe, and continued to be used in Eastern Christian ecclesiastical documents into the 20th century. In this case, it refers to an individual year in the cycle: the "the eighth indiction" means the eighth year of the current indiction. The term derives from the Latin "indictio", which originally referred to the reassessment of taxation in the Roman Empire which took place every fifteen years.
